The second EP20 electrical locomotive is going to 5,000 km run
Dual system passenger electrical locomotive EP20-002, assembly of which was completed at Novocherkassk Locomotive Building Plant (hereinafter referred as NEVZ, being in ZAO Transmashholding group of companies) in this March, left for VNIIZT test ring in Scherbinka. It will have 5,000 km run in service, which is the most important part of new locos tests.
In parallel, tests of EP20-001 electrical locomotive continue. As of today the above loco had pull and energy efficiency tests at a speed of 120 km/h, sanitary and hygienic tests to ensure for cabin microclimate parameters in winter conditions and trial run. Designers are starting loco operations at the speed test ground Belorechenskaya – Maikop (North-Caucasian Railway): pull and energy efficiency tests at a speed of 160 km/h and summer time sanitary and hygienic tests will be held there.
According to the current planning, in September 2012 EP20 will get compliance certificate and in the fourth quarter delivery of the electrical locomotives to the Russian railways will commence.
EP20 is a first dual system electrical locomotive able to run passenger trains at a speed of up to 200 km/h. The loco is equipped with asynchronous traction drive based on IGBT transistors. Technical solutions to be realized will allow several times reduction of maintenance scope, increase of overhaul life and power savings.
EP20 will be a basic platform for electrical locomotives based on which a family of passenger and freight locos of various types will be developed. The concept of a new generation basic platform will make it possible to reach standardization level for components and systems of passenger electrical locomotives EP2 and EP3 of 85% and the same for freight locomotives 2ES4 and 2ES5 up to 70-75%.
