New TEM28 shunting locomotive introduced to media at BMZ

Presentation of TEM28 prototype shunting diesel locomotive with AC-DC electric transmission took place at Bryansk Engineering Plant (BMZ, part of JSC Transmashholding).

Among the event participants was Kirill Lipa, CEO of Transmashholding.

A new 895 kW diesel engine was installed on TEM28. Because of the advanced engine performance, the new locomotive is capable of hauling trains with the weight by 1.5 heavier than mass-production locomotives do.

The new diesel locomotive shows excellent economic and environmental performance, and high reliability. Its LLC is much lower than of similar currently operated locomotives.

TEM28 is a hood-type locomotive. It consists of 5 key modules: cooling chamber, diesel-generator set, electric equipment, driver’s cab, and braking equipment module. The modular design makes it possible to introduce new maintenance approaches by transferring to the maximum manufacturing and repair operations from depots to plants thus shortening rolling stock downtimes and significantly reducing time and cost of new diesel locomotive model development and launch into production.

Application of wheel-motor blocks with the cannon box antifriction bearing in the design of 3-axle bogie helps to reduce its maintenance time in the course of operation thus resulting in lower life cycle cost.

Design engineers of the new locomotive gave special consideration to comfortable working conditions of the locomotive crew and developed an all-round vision cab. This solution was initially applied at BMZ for TEM-TMH diesel locomotive with modular layout and TEM35 with a hybrid propulsion system.

It is expected that the new shunting locomotive goes for testing in the near future. Testing is planned to last till October this year, and then the pilot batch manufacturing starts.
