EP20 Olympus Electric Locomotive will be produced with Russian-made cabins

Novocherkassk Locomotive Building Plant (NEVZ, belongs to Transmashholding Group) has finalized testing of EP20 electric locomotive integrating prototype cabins produced within import substitution programю.

The Acceptance Committee has reviewed development results and recommended to approve prototype cabins for installation at EP20 electric locomotives starting loco №053.

A new cabin of EP20 is a joint development of Transmashholding, TRTrans Engineering Center (EP20 developer) and NPP Polyot (Scientific and Production Enterprise). Technical documents have been developed and a prototype has been built under pressure of time.

The cabin has been tested in a weather-meter under the whole range of operational temperatures from -50о to +40о C and qualification tests have been performed at speed testing ground in Byelorechensk. All tests have positive results.

EP20 Olympus is a first Russian dual system electric locomotive able to haul passenger trains at speeds up to 200 km/h at AC and DC mainlines. The loco is equipped with asynchronous traction drive. The technical solutions implemented in the product enable to reduce several times the scope of its maintenance, increase runs between repairs and ensure for electric power saving.

EP20 electric locomotives are operated at five RZD Locomotive Departments: Moskovskaya, Gorkovskaya, Oktyabrskaya, North-Caucasus and South-Eastern.

By the end of 2016 another three EP20 locomotives with Russian-made cabins will be produced.
