First EP20 locomotives have passed a one-million milestone

EP20 Olympus electric locomotives №25 and №29 (registered at home depot Moskwa-Sortirovochnaya), produced by Novocherkassk Electric Locomotive Building Plant (NEVZ, belongs to Transmashholding Group) have passed a significant milestone: the mileage of each of them has exceeded 1 million km, TMH PR Department has reported.

During their operation EP20 have gained a reputation of reliable and controllable vehicle.

EP20 Olympus is a first Russian dual system electric locomotive capable to haul passenger trains at speeds up to 200 km/h. It was designed in TRTrans Engineering Center established jointly by Transmashholding and its technological partner Alstom. The serial production of these locomotives has been carried out at NEVZ since 2012, up to now 56 electric locos have been built.

Average daily mileage of EP20 electric locomotives exceeds 1,000 km due to their technical features, primarily, due to the ability of operating both at AC and DC lines and realizable haulage capacity and speed (for reference: average daily mileage of EP1M AC electric locomotive is about 600 km).

EP20 loco is equipped with asynchronous traction drive based on IGBT transistors. The implemented technical solutions enable to reduce several times the scope of its maintenance, increase runs between repairs and ensure for electric power saving. A modular cabin of EP20 meets advanced requirements for safety, ergonomics, comfort and aesthetics. Sophisticated development of an ergonomic layout enabled creation of a modern cabin shape and loco crew work place design in line with global trends. A number of new technical solutions including the system ensuring for internal environment parameters, performing heating and air-conditioning functions and automatic control of the set cabin temperature.

For the majority of characteristics, EP20 electric locomotives are on a level of the best world-class products and outclass them in terms of some features: wider range of operational temperatures, power supply, enlarged haul distances.

EP20 electric locomotives are operated at five RZD Locomotive Departments: Moskovskaya, Gorkovskaya, Oktyabrskaya, North-Caucasus and South-Eastern. They operate between Moscow and the following cities: Adler, Nizhny Novgorod, Saint-Petersburg, Anapa, Voronezh, Orsk, Kazan, Yekaterinburg, Minsk (Byelorussia), Vainikkala (Finland).

In compliance with the signed contract, by 2020 RZD will be delivered 200 EP20 dual-system electric locomotives.
