The most powerful mainline freight diesel locomotive produced by BMZ will be tested on the Baikal/Amur Railway

3ТЭ25К2М mainline freight diesel locomotive produced by Bryansk Machine-building Plant (BMZ, belongs to the Transmashholding Group) has been delivered to the Baikal/Amur Railway.

The locomotive will be registered with Novaya Chara Depot. Its mileage on mainline service will be fifty thousand km. 3ТЭ25К2М locomotive has been successfully tested in the central part of Russia and now it will have to prove its compliance with the set objectives under real operational conditions. Being registered with Kursk and Kursk-Sortirovochny Depots, 3ТЭ25К2М has completed the 10,000 km trial operation run both in two-and three-section version, however, the actual run has totaled more than 11,000. The trial run performed under the test program agreed with RZD has become a successful completion of preliminary tests. The diesel locomotive has carried about 240,000 tons of cargoes, the maximum weight of the train to be 8,230 tons.

The most powerful diesel locomotive was developed by Bryansk designers specifically for operations in severe climate conditions on track sections with a complicated profile. It is designed for hauling trains of the excessive weight: up to 7,100 tons.

Upon results of the analysis of many-year operations of the previous series locomotives on the Baikal/Amur Railway, a range of advanced technical solutions were applied in design of the new loco. It integrates a reliable and powerful GEVO12 diesel engine together with auxiliary equipment.

As a result, section engine power increased up to 3,100 kW. Independent cabin heating appeared, electric units requiring minimum maintenance were installed, fuel, water and air systems are designed based on operations at low temperature environment. At present basic cargo transportation at the Baikal/Amur Railway is carried out by 2TE25A and 3TE10MK locomotives able to haul trains of up to 5,600 tons. Increase of the train weight up to 7,100 tons enables to significantly raise the total freight carriage along the Baikal/Amur Railway without construction of additional tracks.

The need of the Baikal/Amur Railroad in new locomotives for hauling trains weighing 7,100 tons based on various estimates is more than 400 units up to 2025. 3TE25K2M diesel locomotives can be used with maximum efficiency to solve this problem.

Transmashholding specialists for the first time presented 3TE25K2M diesel locomotive to the professional public in February 2017. At present, JSC Transmashholding is the only manufacturer of traction rolling stock in Russia, capable of producing the entire line of railway diesel locomotives and electric locomotives: of various power, composition, type of current and application.
